Do I need the Envato Tool (which I am struggling with) to keep my theme, just bought and associated plugins updated?
I just bought Organico fro a client. I use CMS Commander to keep everything updated automatically

No, If you can update theme by CMS commander, you don't need install Envato Tool.
One more thing, If you custom for your client, don't forget install child theme and custom on it.
Because, if you don't use child theme for custom. It'll lost when you update theme.

Don't worry about that.
The content or database don't change when update theme. I mean your custom on file style.css or custom code may be lost if you do it on parent theme.
