    I would like the menu to hover over the slider and appear translucent like on the demo.  Right now the slider is about 120 pixels below the menu and not underneath it.

    Ignore this.  I started over with a new wordpress install and reuploaded the theme.  Everything is working like the demo after i did the content import.
